You already have the first step; you realize you need to improve. How do you get there?

-Play slow games. This allows you to keep track of what is defended and what is attacked. You can't improve if you are playing blitz all the time.

-Solve puzzles/ get a tactics book. Chess is a game of patterns, solving more puzzles will help you recognize common motifs.

-Always do a postmortem, whether it is a win or a loss. Games are like a multiple choice test; you narrow down better and better moves so you have a better idea next time. Going over where you went wrong is a good way to improve.

-Study master games. A progression I suggest is Morphy -> Rubinstein, Capablanca, Lasker, Alekhine -> Keres, Botvinnik, Smyslov. There are tons of youtube channels that go over the games and allow you to "solve" critical moments in the game. Studying master games helps you build strategical focus and appreciation for the game. Also obtain ideas, and look pretty cool at it too.  You can also look into purchasing a game collection like "Alekhine's My Best Games". More annotations are better.

-Join a chess club! Surrounding yourself with stronger players is another way to get stronger. Don't be afraid to play stronger opponents because it plays into the postmortem point above. Losing is hard, but you will win eventually.

-Focus on opening principles:

  • Control the center
  • Develop your pieces quickly
  • Get your king to safety

-Learn basic mating patterns (Smothered, back-rank, B + R, Q + K, etc...)

  • After basic mating patterns, you can go into K + P endgames.
