How do I display which pieces are off the board?

Sorry for the total n00b question, but I can't find the setting that will show which pieces have been captured and are off the board. I've seen it displayed for players on Chess.com's Twitch channel (see https://clips.twitch.tv/AntediluvianNaiveJellyfishSpicyBoy?tt_content=url&tt_medium=clips_api), so there's gotta be a setting somewhere, but I just can't find it. Thanks.

It is a strange question.

If you play a game in real time, you know which  your pieces and your opponent's pieces are off the board automatically.

Chess pieces on the board are not many.

You can see all them and count up with one look.

I'm still a beginner and I'm not used to playing on a screen instead of a board. I still count a little slowly, and having to evaluate what's still on the board during a Rapid game, even a 15|10, makes me feel rushed. Being able to see what is and is not on the board is helpful right now. Do you know what the setting is?

Timmy, sorry..

I don't know about this setting you speak about.

There isn't such a setting. The pieces captured by a player are displayed next to their avatar picture. If a player is ahead material, then a plus number is displayed next to their captured pieces.

If you're not seeing the captured pieces for your own games, then maybe you changed the default font size for your browser.

That did it! I normally zoom to 125% in my browser, but at some point I'd changed the font size from the default medium up to large. I just reset it to medium (and zoomed to 150% because my eyes are terrible) and reviewed a game and there they are! The pieces are right where they're supposed to be -- and weird artifacting around peoples' flags is gone, and the left sidebar behaves better. I can't express how happy this has made me, or how glad I am that it was such an easy fix. Thank you so much!

If you are willing to take advice from a 2350 player:

FORGET the pieces that are off the board. They're gone, and cannot affect the game in any way. Focus on the pieces that are ON the board. They are the only ones that matter.

It's good advice, and I understand your point. Now that I've played a few games being able to see them, I find that I'm not really looking at them. I mean, I see them but I'm not consulting them, if you know what I mean. I'm rapidly getting better at counting, so it's less of a potential bad habit and more of a temporary safety blanket for an old beginner. Soon enough, I probably won't even notice them.

go to Settings -> Theme and change the "Background" setting so that it is a color other than white or black so that the white and black pieces that are off the board can be seen.

After that you can browse my blog for some instructive resources for beginners and beyond!...
