It doesn't help matters that there is an abundance of cheaters on online chess. There are also people who intentionally lose to keep their rating low. I have encountered quite a number of people who have a low rating but play with skill much higher than their rating. You may not be as bad at playing chess as you think you are. It mostly comes down to who you are playing against.

They can't break through the low Elo barrier because many low Elo players are highly skilled and they keep each other down. Like if 90% of 200 Elo players are as strong as 1000 Elo, they will be paired against each other and winratio will be 50% so their rating will not change. (sure 5% are truly 200, but another 5% is say 1200 who climb to their unwanted destination - 300 where other 1200s are crumpled). This is just an example, proportions could be different, but when there's not enough crossplay and when initial rating is inherently inaccurate such situations are unavoidable. This is called a localized pool. To remove such pools chess.com needs to conduct mandatory pool-joining tournaments and do hard recalculation with reassignments of ratings. This was described in Arpad Elo (creator of Elo system) book, I'm not making things up. And to prevent such pools, you need to stop rating people right from the start and stop them from affecting rating of others. First they must play a considerable amount of games (like 50 maybe) against players who have a well established rating, then they can receive their initial rating (not like now - you say you're beginner, advanced etc during registration and you get rated immediately and you then affect ratings of everyone - that's crazy). And you should not allow tight matchmaking, must be something random within wide range like +/- 200 Elo to ensure good cross-play, yes that would be predictable win/loss but this is necessary to avoid localized distortions.

It's either you are bad or you are good

So I'm just going to be bad forever?

ARMRook

It's much less stressful playing unrated games, and players are more willing to chat. I would recommend that and see if your enthusiasm for the game improves.

I have given the OP the Ultimate Advice!

At this point, The OP has to make a choice.

The OP could listen to my advice and reach rank 1,000.

or

The OP could refuse to listen and stay at rank 100.

Both options are correct!

I know what option I'm choosing if both are correct.

I have been stuck below 200 elo forever and always keep losing. I'm about to quit and never play chess again. How do I gain motivation?

Stop playing online, go out to a club. Online chess is fake and toxic at this level.

Hey can you cite the book here? I'm interested in the mathematics of this. (specifically, it should be possibly to empirically test if this is happening or not here, statistically!)

There's really not an abundance of cheaters around 100 elo mate.

Their is nothing wrong with being rated 100 or 1000.

Its completely fine.

Their are thousands of chess players in those rating ranges so it’s not bad.

The real issue is about your happiness.

You said all the losing and being rated 100 is causing you to lose motivation which isn’t good!

Their is tons of people who are rated 100 and never lose motivation and are always happy.

—————————

Obviously, Sometimes, you are doing isn’t working.

So you need to do something different.

Based on what you said, you have been developing your pieces to center and your still losing.

You been doing what others have said and it hasn’t helped you. It has only made things worse.

So I came to your thread offering you a different way to play chess which might help you actually do better.

Their are different ways of playing chess because their are different play styles which exist in chess.

Maybe, you are not doing well because your not playing in the style that suits you best.

———————————

I have had dozens of people thank me!

They thanked me because I showed them how to play chess in a different way!

————————————

You should play the way which suits you best.

If playing the way I recommend doesn’t work, Than don’t do it. All I was saying was for you to try.

Let’s say their is 10 different playing styles.

Out of those 10 different styles, You have only tried 1 style which isn’t working.

I am recommending a different style which may or may not work as well.

We will never know unless you try.

My Chess Personality style is of a Grinder.

Maybe, you are the same or maybe you are different.

I don’t know!

I'd argue that in the endgame tactics and blunders are more visible, but when the board is full of pieces, novice often feels lost.

Novices as in you? Also, why do you have 2 different personas? You act like a moron in the chess cheating forum but normal here?
