I'm a beginner and I've won a lot against other beginners just by focusing on the file

I just put all my attention on lining up my queen and 2 rooks on and open file, and arranging my other pieces to support their rise.

I keep having these games against other beginners, where they put loads of work in claiming the central square and taking all my pieces, and I just line up my QRR and checkmate. Like this morning..I won what I thought was a lost game! My opponent had all their pieces down on my end of the board, they were busy claiming the middle and picking off all my pieces, and at the end, they had mostly all their pieces swarming around my king (which was hiding behind 2 pawns), and I had ONLY the Queen and both Rooks and the 2 pawns next to my king, and I just checkmated them out of nowhere.

I think the big issue with this is that it requires a large time investment and is very obvious, while being very able to counter A2,A3 or H2,H3 removes all the threat from that idea

I strongly recommend you to check out the yt series called Building habits - how to improve at chess by chessbrah channel. If you have twitch account you can also watch it there. Its great for beginners and will help you a lot.

And this is what happens when you blindly play an opening without paying attention to the board.

@tombo1 as long as you have a plan (building pressure on a file, using other pieces to support it) you're generally going to have good games.

at my level most of my games are won by simply making less mistakes then my opponent but unfortunately most of the games that I lose of course....are a result of the exact opposite

There are two ways to attack the center: the traditional way with pawns and knights, or the modern-style fianchetto'ed bishop.

Do not have to attack through the center once you control it. Paraphrasing here  but "Once the center is  secured one should look to attack on either wing." Not sure who said this either Meiden or Euwe.
