I’m a struggling beginner

I’m a complete beginner with ADHD and an acquired brain injury.
I’m having trouble understanding how to connect my knowledge when playing.

I’ve been learning openings for a while and am stuck because of this.

Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

Improving at chess can be quite challenging, but there are various ways to enhance your skills.

For those looking to improve without coaching, here's some valuable advice:

1. Play Frequently: The more you play, the better you'll become at recognizing patterns and making strategic decisions.
2. Analyze Your Games: Review your past games to identify mistakes and areas where you can improve. This self-analysis is a powerful learning tool.
3. Focus on Tactics: Tactics play a crucial role in chess. Spend time solving tactical puzzles and exercises to sharpen your tactical skills.
4. Learn from Masters: Studying grandmaster games can provide insights into advanced strategies and tactics.

Forget openings. Learn the game "backwards": start with checkmate puzzles, then endgames, then middlegames, *then* you'll understand what openings are trying to do.

https://www.chess.com/puzzles are nice and quick and fun and the best way to learn quick mates. Keep doing them every day and your subconscious will take over, so ADHD won't be a problem.

Make sure you understand exchanges and the value of each piece. (If that sentence didn't make complete sense, google "chess piece exchange value" and watch some youtube videos, or read some article,s whatever works best for you. Use the same resources to learn about endgames.

I think as a beginner, don't focus on learning the openings but rather focus on learning the chess principles first. I found this video pretty good which sums up a lot of principles from the opening to the endgame: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nXyJdetptXg

You've been on the site for 2 years and played one game each year. At that rate you will be a chess master in no time.
