Is it possible to reach 2000 ONLY by studying tactics?

Hello, I want to make most of my time efficient.

I've heard players say do not study openings, only focus on tactics.

What about the middle game, end game, and strategy evaluation? They are never mentioned.

Does this mean that it's possible to reach a high rating ONLY by studying tactics and nothing else?

No. Impossible

Nobody ever actually tried it. You could be the first.

Let us know.

Thank you so much for the encouragement. I only mentioned 2,000 without knowing what it really means or requires, haha. Yes, I will ONLY study tactics since that's what I keep hearing and find out how high can I get. Basically I wanted to know how high can someone get before it becomes necessary to worry about other things, most likely, until one stops making progress :-)

Depends on your talent. But it would be better to play some games from time to time with slightly stronger opponents and discuss after the game what move could have been better. Some things you need to understand in a more strategic way.

But you can become a 2000+ player without studying a book. Thats for sure

Thanks, it's not necessary for me to be 2,000. I just want to improve enough to understand what is happening in GM chess tournaments (as a viewer of course) and enjoy watching them. Right now, they're confusing. Yes, not necessarily books, I meant which topics to focus on :-)

How high can someone get with the least amount of studying?

You have to study all aspects of chess to get that high I think.

At 1400 Elo you will understand a good part;that is 1500 here.

You should look at this serie of 5 videos and if you can repeat 100% of their content  you will have a good start!

And play 3 or 4 games every day and some tactics.

Thank you. What time settings should I play the games in if I just started playing? I've been playing 5 | 5 blitz but I don't feel I'm improving

I beat a guy with a rating of 1800 and 2500 in problems over at lichess.org. I am rated way lower than that that in both categories. Chess is so much more than tactics. You can screw up a winning position if you don't know why you are winning.

If you want to improve you need to play the same opening time and time again. Try and understand what you want to achieve in the kind of positions that generaly occur from them.

You should definitely spend time on lower time controls. Play 30 + 0 and THINK. Never rush, even when you're up the exchange. Especially when you're up the exchange.

Good luck on your journey happy.png

I know 2 people that made it to USCF Expert on tactics, and crazy openings like the halloween gambit.  They do very well when playing against anyone close to their rating.  But as soon as they have to play up in an Open section of a tournament?  They get crushed.

I suggest you study Game Collection of Tal. Since you enjoy tactics, you will learn a lot from Tal the greatest tactician. And you will learn endgame technics, middle game strategy and openings too.

10+6 is not bad imo....if you are around 1300 here it's not too fast.

if you need more time try 15+10

but you must learn what to do and why, so do look at the 5 video please

play the opening he does because he do explain the basic concepts and why he move each pawns and pieces.

You must have realistic goals;+300 points this year is already a lot.

+900 will take many years.

I think that a person can go to 2000 and beyond their first year playing,  depending on their talent.   A different person might not be able to go 1000 in 10 years tho!

Even Carlsen needed 3 years and a coach.Same with Fisher....a normal person need 6-7 years minimum.

Tactics and positional play are just elements of one single process.

I searched and found this position, it is bad enough or good enough that I dont need to search any further . I will choose it or discard it.( positional decision)

I am not sure this position is good or bad, I feel that I need to search deeper ( tactical search).

Final decision come from decision from above two.
