That’s automatic that this point #19. Oh, welp, that was unexpected

I only brought it up because there seems to be a lot of confusion about what is used here. In the grand scheme of things obviously not a big deal. But I also think its good to give people the correct information.

Honestly until you posted I had no idea what scoring system lichess used.

Thanks, Josh. The level thing might be a contributing factor. I think it might be more social anxiety though. I guess I think bots won’t judge me but strangers will? I posted on here to get an achievement and then played 6 games against humans. That felt like a big accomplishment.
I’m on here to learn so I can play chess with my son and spend quality time together. He won the chess championship at his school and I can now beat him about 25% of the time. It’s been a lot more fun since I’ve been on the app. :)

Having played chess for rough;y 50 years OTB, online and for fun with friends. I can guarantee you that NOBODY will be judging you. Youre at a tournament full of people that all have the same thing on their mind. To play the best chess they can. Just jump in and have fun.

I only play bots, but it is different for me. I don't care about ratings at all. I just want to have sufficient opening book knowledge to not look like a complete fool in front of online strangers.

Oddly enough i'll play anyone over a board IRL, and I don't mind losing repeatedly against strong players. So maybe some online phobia is at work (shrug)

i'll probably start playing online opponents soon. I can beat 1600-1800 bots with fair consistency, but this means nothing; the bots are too predictable.

I think I figured it out. I’m not afraid of being judged, I’m afraid of being trolled. My husband was playing and got nasty messages from another player. I’m here to relax, not be shamed. I’ll check my settings and maybe that will help.

For some reason, I don’t want to play against humans and feel more comfortable with puzzles, bots, and the coach. But those don’t count towards stats so I can’t take advantage of the insights feature. Has anyone else felt this way?

When I first started, I didn't want to play anyone live. 3,000 games later, and live is the only thing I play. You'll get used to it.

It happens, just remember to have fun

Try playing games with a 3 day move timer. It gives you more time to think, you are not under pressure and can analyse your moves before making it 🙂

hi op! i feel the same way :-) im too scared sometimes to play online mostly because im im afraid i'd get badly humiliated by my opponent or trashtalked. here r some things i did to manage that:
-play daily games! 1 day or 3 days, you choose. I feel less under pressure and theres more time to make a good move.
-disable!! chat!! I get that some people want to leave it open to make conversation for fun, but some people can also be really mean to you for no reason... T_T they'll try to taunt u and force u to make a move by saying stuff like "bro make a move" even though ur in like. a 30 min game or sum.
-don't always overestimate your opponent (but dont underestimate them either). don't worry or dwell on the potential that they might be better and just focus on yourself!
-take every defeat as a lesson to learn rather than something to be ashamed of :-D a lot of people would rather choose to celebrate their victories rather than focus and laugh at the opponent's mistake. we are all here to learn, so don't hesitate to play (and have fun!)
and heres the truth: bot games are a whole lot more different than human games. sure, you may learn alot from the top player bots for example, but you're still playing with bots. realistically if u want to improve in chess, you'll learn a lot from real people instead. i dont know if u ever plan to play OTB, but i assure u playing alot online will help you prepare for that. :-D
I just properly started chess a few months ago and am only merely 400 elo, but I hope this advice still helps nontheless. I believe improving your mentality and mental endurance in chess should be proiortized first before learning all the fundamentals.
