Just got docked 76 points for resigning from a hopeless postition. A bit harsh I thought!

That is because your rating is still provisional. As you play more games then rating points you gain or lose from a game will become much smaller, and will typically be around +\- 15 points or less for a game. Depending on your rating and your opponents rating.
