playing the computer instead of humans

I just had this thought in regard to how to improve my chess skills (keep in mind I’ve only been practicing for a couple weeks now)

If I just play games against computer, it would be faster (perhaps half time) and hence double the experience gained for my time investment. The downside being that it’s less exciting.

Is this an approach lots of people take advantage of?

it depends what your goals are

playing the computer may improve your skills

someone else can answer that better than me

but computers- especially throttled down computers play nothing like a human; it might as well be a different game imho

and, at the end of the day, how would you know if you were improving unless you play some humans?

i suppose the computer would have to slowly ease its throttling down as you improve but, eventually, it would be full strength and you would never win again

but, apparently, a whole influx of players are playing the comp all day

i guess i am in no position to answer- i have no idea- playing comp is not my thing

i use the comp to help me with tactics from my games and blunders

I've just started 1 month ago too. I've found that bots don't compare to humans at all. You aren't going to gain as much playing them. They make ridiculous choices. For me, videos, puzzles and studying openings have helped the most my first month. If your short on time.. play puzzles or blitz
