You need know openings to predict and control the game.
The above situation has nothing to do with openings.

Hi. I've been playing chess for a week or two (~1200 on lichess.com) and I have a few questions not answered in the (great) FAQ.
At what point is it necessary to learn openings? Mostly I just try to develop pieces and control the center without a specific plan - is this OK https://9apps.ooo/ ?
What are the endgames I should know? I currently know K+Q, K+R and R+R. What are the most common, and where's the best place to learn them?
What is a good Elo goal to aim for if I'm playing and doing tactics for 1/2 - 1 hour per day?
Thanks.
Hi!
Openings: Since you are already an intermediate player (rated 1200 ) it would be a good time to choose a small repertoire of openings. Do not go in deep though, just get the fundamentals. I think you may already have a feeling of what kind of positions you like the most, then I would suggest you to choose the opening that most likely leads you to them.
Endings: Basic mates + basic endings should be fine (the ones you find at a beginning of any boook)
ELO goal: For an intermediate level player, accordng to a survey based on Blitz ratngs at Chess.com, if yo u devoted 20 hours/week to chess activities (50% play, 50% improving activities like studying + solving excercises) working by your own (no coaching) then after a year you could reach 1300 - 1400 (expected).
Good luck!
In other words, a challenging situation.
What conceptual ideas should intuitively arise from the situation?
I went with the white king to attack the rook, which was wrong. Black gets the left pawns upgraded to queens this way.
Help needed, thank you.
