I would suggest continuing with rapid chess. Longer games are typically most productive for sub-1000 players; it gives you a decent amount of time to think, and it provides more quality chess to analyze afterwards. You can improve with either time control, but I think rapid is the better choice.
Also, make sure to analyze your games afterwards. This is one of the best things you can do for improvement, as it helps you recognize good ideas and patterns and avoid errors for your future games.
