This cannot be emphasized enough; an understanding of the endgame basics will pay off, turning draws into wins and losses into draws. The endgame is the one phase of the game that beginners should not resign if they are at a disadvantage. Conversely, the endgame is where you cash in your tactical advantage. Nothing is worse than having a won game and losing the endgame because you don't know it as well as your opponent, where your won position gradually erodes to an even one, then to a lost one. You end up frustrated at losing a won endgame but can't pinpoint where you went wrong.
