How odd. I am a relative idiot when it comes to chess but I'm fairly sure I could beat a king and three pawns with a king and two queens. Except in the third example where there is no king to attack so I probably couldn't win that .

I think the OP just set up the first board in the wrong direction. The other two examples support the idea - If two of your pieces are being forked, if you can move one of them with check to the opponent's king, then you can usually get both forked pieces out of trouble. But he should have stated the idea clearly.

But yeah, penguins *are* cute...
