tilted/depressed beyond belief

Hi,

Been studying like crazy for the last couple of weeks and it's not paid off. I'm even going backwards, should I quit or just take a break... Literally hung my queen in a rapid game just now

This is normal for all of us, unfortunately

I recommend taking a break, maybe just a day off, possibly two, that's what I normally do to untilt. Definitely don't quit

sounds like online chess. people cheating, playing like idiots and getting super lucky etc.

try OTB it's much better

Play longer time controls or even a daily game. Take the stress out, take time to weigh up your options and enjoy the game.

You don't practice and study for the immediate gain, you do so for the long term. It could be weeks even a couple months before your work today delivers results for you. That's normal! Make chess not a chore, it should be fun. Improvement will come with consistent effort, don't stress when results aren't had immediately. And everyone has bad games, I had a bad game earlier today- it's OK! You learn and move on, or laugh at the silly blunder and remember it's not something you typically do.

+1 I hung 2 Queens yesterday so don't feel bad about that happens to everyone. I also lost to a 500 yesterday but... Normally just take a short break. Also play chess for fun don't worry about rating happy.png funny enough it actually helped mine.

OP trolling ftw.

DasBurner

this is probably trivial for you but I find I play a lot better (i.e stop dropping pieces, finding tactics, etc) when I'm not tired/after I drink coffee or something. Taking a break for a few days works very well too

I tried to check a few games, and they are weird. Take this one:

Not much happens, then the game suddenly ends with white winning on move 19, in an equal position. Did you lose on time on move 19? That seems bizarre.

I just got pissed that I lost the b pawn with a stupid move and I resigned

Oh how I recognise your learning pattern, we share it :)

Study like crazy for some time, not learning a thing.

But I found the missing link for my learning mistakes, maybe the same applies to yours? (Note that this is from playing the violin and study engineering, I’m a beginner in chess, so don’t check my games ;D )

I forget that learning and applying is two different things. Learning can go fast, but is isn’t visible until the lessons apply in your behaviour/play. Quite often the new neutron patterns show themselves in other parts of live first. Eg, if I study some new math, it will show in my music first (after some days) . And then after a week or three, it shows itself in my understanding of the math topic.

So enjoy your new learnings in some other part of your life while you wait for it to pay of in your chess play!

There is hope! Usually before someone improves they'll notice a drop in their rating. It happens all the time! That being said, I think you're expecting results a little bit too quickly. A few weeks spent on chess is not that much in one's life. You can't learn a new language in a few weeks either.

What I'd be a lot more worried about, if I were you, is whether your current goal (rapid improvement) is the right goal for you. Already after a few weeks you get very frustrated. I can't see how spending time on the game is fun that way. It's much better for your rating if you're still playing in a year or 2, so try and keep it fun for yourself too!

Maybe try playing unrated, it takes the stress of losing rating out of the equation and the games are more chill, at least in my experience. Sorry to hear that you’re tilting though but trust the process your hard work will pay off eventually if you stick to it

Chess kind of taught me something i think. I always want to learn by myself but chess is a game thats been built upon and improved by others so thats probably almost impossible. Ive gotten to 1400 but i have no clue how much harder it gets, or as im trying to imply HOW to learn and study this game properly. Every great chess player had a coach, but if i got to 1400 without actual coaching im sure you can. Im kind of floating at 1300 though. I think it can be hard to learn how to apply something weve learned and think how may different possibilities there are likei  have two videos i alternate back and forth between on the sicilian and petrov but how often will that really come handy, no one plays into the yugoslav lol

Good chess doesn't happen overnight.....it's a process....a journey that never ends....that's what makes it worthwhile....if it were easy you would not gain as much satisfaction from improving, nor pride in your achievements, which are the natural products of persistence and diligence....

You have likely tired your mind by working hard-and when your mind is tired, you won't actually learn anything from the studying that you do.

Always keep this sentence in mind; work well, not hard. Studying a little every-day is great-because it means your mind/body is likely not tired when you do study. And therefore, you will actually learn from the studying.

My advice is: Take a hot bath, eat, drink, and get rest. As that will help you get un-tilted.

Do something other than chess for some weeks/A month that you enjoy, then come back, and you will notice a huge difference.
