All though starting chess almost 3 months ago, I still can figure out what i´m doing wrong.

To help me get better, I am

  • Doing lots of puzzles, currently high 1200´s
  • Watching Gothamchess´s Videos
  • Watching Hikaru´s Videos
  • playing lots of games
  • Taking Chess.com´s Lessons                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                           I am a 600 rapid, 700 blitz, and 1050 or something bullet. Hi, to improve on chess very important thing is to self analayse your games.

Doing tactics is good but you should check which tactics level is worst and try to improve it.

Playing bullet from improvment side it is not useful at all.

Try playing most games on 15 mins time control.

Best regards Ivan.

It looks like you are resigning too soon. People drop pieces left and right at your level.

Why would you resign here? What's wrong with Ke8? If he traded Queens, you'd be down by one pawn.

I like a series being offered by GM Aman Hambleton on the Chessbrahs showing the results of following a set of fairly simple rules to play, called "Building Habits".

Among them is "Never resign".

He started with a set of rules to get to 500 and has posted videos on YouTube up to 700.  The livestream on Twitch is moving up to 1000.

Play more rapid than blitz or bullet so you have time to think about moves. At your level you're more likely to just randomly move pieces around while missing the obvious things and whoever wins is the first player to get their tactic to work. Rapid is much better for beginners so they actually learn how to think in chess. The more you play, the faster your brain will get at recognizing patterns and ideas, and slowly you can try working on faster-paced games.

I always play with increments so that I don't really feel time pressure. Otherwise I panic way too quickly and my game gets dragged down a lot. I also don't play rated games and never have and never will because I don't need to take it seriously, I just want to play chess. Your mindset may require a different approach, but this is my take on it.

Thank you wildekaart, but for me, I don’t move prices around randomly. Most of my blunders are because I overthink things, again, thanks for the advice but that one bit is partly wrong

Hi! My name is Lauren Goodkind and I'm a chess coach based in California.  Never resign as a beginner chess player since your opponent can still make silly mistakes.

I also offer a  free beginner’s free eBook on my website, www.ChessByLauren.com in case you are interested.

Before each move, I highly encourage you ask questions before every move such as, “If I move here, is it safe?”, “Can I safely capture a piece?”, and more.

Also consider all checks and captures on your side and also your opponent’s side.

Learn basic tactics such as the fork, discovered attack, pin, and more.  I offer interactive puzzles on my website: https://www.chessbylauren.com/two-choice-puzzles.php

If you are serious about chess, I highly recommend you hiring a chess coach to help you.

I hope that this helps.

1-Spend some time going through this free book: https://www.chessable.com/smithys-opening-fundamentals/course/21302/
2-Drill very-low level tactics on a daily basis for 12 weeks, for starters: 1200 is too high for you. You should become proficient in the 5-6 most elementary tactics (forks, pins, skewers, discoveries, etc.) at very, very low levels that do not require calculation, only piciking-up all relevant information on the board. This will reduce board-blindness and increase tactical awareness, thus reducing blunders and egregious mistakes.
3-Bullet and blitz are great fun but at your level, all you are doing is picking up bad habits instead of creating good ones. Once you get impulsive play under control, blitz can be a great tool for testing out new openings or variations.
4- Create a little opening repertoire and stick with it, once you figure out what you feel comfortable. Just stick with opening principles and fundamentals. Don't waste your time with in-depth study, it makes no difference whatsoever at your level. Whoever makes the least number of blunders and egregious mistakes usually wins.
5- Analyze your games, even if only to run the engine and identify your blunders so you can be aware of when you make them and what type they are.

Funny thing is, you ask what you're doing wrong, then just list it all...

_ Buy a real chess set, tournament size (n°5)

_ Purchase, or borrow from a Library, a couple of chess books, like, one for beginners, and one for endgames.

_ Spend an hour a day studying in these books on your real chess set. Alternate beginner's book and endgames.

_ Play one game 30 minutes a day, where your main goal is not to blunder pieces and pawns, and not overlook free gifts from your opponents. Don't "blitz" the game.

_ Replay the said game on your real chess set, and try to figure out the value of the moves, and if other moves would have been better, by looking, and moving pieces on the board, with your hand.

_ Join a real chess club if you can, as soon as possible, and get to play some real competition on the board.

_ Forget about bullet and video lessons, these are toxic.
