What should I be watching?

I see so much stuff about how to get better at chess and what I should be paying attention to. I understand all of that…. Minimally…. But what should I be searching for on YouTube? I want a better understanding of tactics and mates and more than just a “move here, then here” guide. I want a deeper understanding of the mechanics and why some of these insane moves made by high level players make sense. I’m at ~1080 right now and I’m sick of free styling every game I play. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Sorry in advance for the lack of structure to this post. It’s late and I’m tired…

Thanks again!

Best beginner-focused exposition of chess principles I've seen is Daniel Naroditsky's speedrun he has on youtube where he starts at low elo and climbs to very high elo... but every game he does an over-explain of his thought processes in terms of both tactics and chess principles. I usually recommend that to beginners. I think Simon Williams also does a very good job focusing on concepts. He has some free content, but also some chessable and chessbase content if you're willing to pay for it. Another thing that can help is just watching competitive chess matches live commentated. Hearing people talk about the game you will pick up on stuff, and it can be fun watching competitive games at the same time.

Yes there's alot of contradictory opinions, alot of bad advice, and alot of good advice out there... I think you have to ask yourself whether the advice rings true or appeals to you before you take it. Ultimately you have to be the one in charge of your growth and development.
