Why am I not improving in Chess?

I have been playing chess for around 6 months and I have been improving in puzzles, however, I still am not making a lot of progress in my blitz rating. I am 2000 rating in puzzles and only 730 rated Blitz and I am not sure why. Can someone explain it to me?

900 rapid after 6 months is rlly good. Keep on going, but don’t play blitz and bullet if you seek improvement. Here’s a thing I use. Analyse your last 15 losses, and see where you made mistakes and blunders like missed pin, missed checkmate etc ( you need diamond for this ) or ask someone to analyse your games. Arrange those blunders on docs or slides and send a link for game. Keep doing this, sooner, you will see a pattern. Try to remove that pattern so you won’t make that mistake again happy.png

Hi,

First, if you want to improve you need to dedicate the majority of your time to practice and study, and blitz is counterproductive to that end. Blitz doesn't allow you to think through positions and come up with ideas, and new chess players have a relatively low memorized or familiarized concepts and pattern bank in their memory to draw from than experienced players. You should dedicate more time to slower chess (daily, 15|10 or greater live games), think through the positions, and analyze the games afterwards and figure out what you did wrong and why (lack of knowledge of a concept, pattern, ect).

Second, puzzle ratings are misleading because in puzzles you are focusing on one thing- finding the winning combination in the position. A Chess game has many positions, most that likely won't have a winning combination available- you have to draw from other concepts and ideas during a chess game that are not part of chess puzzles. This is why a balanced approach to study in chess is best for improvement, yes solve puzzles, but you have to do other chess learning to improve as well, puzzles will only help your chess so much.

If you'd like I'd be happy to get on Chess.com Classroom with you sometime and review a game of yours, discuss chess study and concepts, and things of that nature and show you what I mean in more detailed and engaging way. Have fun!

Who cares?  A better question would be: are you enjoying the game?  If not, do something else with your free time.  Chess is just an overrated game, try not to take it too seriously.

Here’s some ideas to help you get better.

-I’ll be happy to analyze one of your chess games for free for my YouTube channel, since I love to help beginners out.  Share one of your games with me!  This is a great way to get better!

-I recommend two books for you: “50 Poison Pieces”   and “Queen For A Day: The Girl’s Guide To Chess Mastery.”  Both books are available on Amazon.com.  Both books are endorsed by chess masters!

-If you are serious about chess, I highly recommend you hiring a chess coach to help you.

-Also consider all checks and captures on your side and also your opponent’s side. Always as, “If I move here, where is my opponent going to move?”. Do this for every single move!

-Play with a slow time control, such as G/30 so you have plenty of time to think before every move.
