Why are my chess960 games better?

I'm older and new to chess, I've started playing again revisiting old videogames like Chessmaster 2000 and Battle Chess. I've started enjoying the game and began using Pychess and chess.com recently.
I found out about chess960 and I've given it a go with my son and here against the computer.
I'm bad, really bad at normal chess, but I find myself more comfortable with chess960. Why is that?
Lack of theoretical knowledge perhaps?
