why is blitz so popular?

when the quality of play seems substantially lower for anyone who is not an expert?

More brain chemicals are released in shorter games (or so I've read) so some folks are just plain addicted.  Others may not have time for longer games.  And then the kids play it (and bullet) because it's cool.  Actually 10 minute isn't the worst thing you can do as long as you analyze your games and try to learn something from each one.  Rapid is, of course, a better choice for most of us.

Not everyone plays for the same reasons. Some people play to improve and others just play to have fun. A shorter game gives me a sensation of pleasure. A long game gives me the same feeling I get taking exams. I don’t like taking exams.

you can grind out more games in blitz. you can probly do 8-10 games per hour as opposed to 1 or 2 with rapid. more games = more experience and if you have a good memory you can remember most of your mistakes and or memorize openings and patterns will make you a better player.

You get more instructional value out of 1 classical game than 50 blitz games.

personally i don't really learn much of anything from short games where both players flop trick lines or garbage moves back and forth under time constraint and then determine a winner based on who blunders the hardest or moves the fastest. if anything i would say i'm worse at chess after playing too much blitz because it just reinforces trashy playing.

difference in 5 or 10 mins is a lot, i think 10 mins is pretty good for getting better, 5 mins it starts to become a time constrained game very quickly.

Its similar to a video game?

Because it's really fast game.

I honestly wonder if the answer is because you can play a game of blitz on the toilet.

For me being a beginner, I find it very hard to calculate more than say 3 or so moves ahead also I find the longer games more draining on me.  5min and 10min I just became accustomed too.

It's also a lot easier to deal with ridiculous behavior in fast games. If someone wants to stall a 5 minute games you're only waiting a bit, but in a 50 minute game...

Yes, but you need to play longer timecontrol games as well, so that you are able to create a plan before you make moves, In less time it becomes more of a mouse/touchpad race.
