Worst moment to resign...

I'm posting largely as a reminder to myself. Game went well for me: I pinned & captured opponent's queen with rook, while avoiding loss of my own to a bishop check. I was closing in on checkmate when my opponent resigned. As I clicked on completing the game with computer, I realized something. My plan after ...r38 was29. b8=q, forcing black rook to capture, with ensuring loss to my queen, or allowing me two queens. I had completely forgotten how vulnerable my king was to rxe1#

How embarrassing & annoying such a loss would have been. Not to mention deserved.

yes, one must always take the time, no matter how far ahead in material, to doublecheck your opponent's threats before moving.    It would have been very embarassing to allow that back rank mate............however it would have sharpened your mind for the future !    Keep playing and enjoying chess !

Here's a bad time to resign:

In the first round of the Monte Carlo Master's tournament in 1902, Marco (Black) resigned against von Popiel (White) in this position:

Instead of Resigns, a better move would have been 36. ... Bg1! threatening mate on h2 and winning White's Queen.

Thankfully, I haven't resigned in a clearly winning position, But I have done something that is not that far off.

On move 66, I chose to take a threefold repetition with Ke7, because I thought that if I hide behind the pawn, I'm not making any progress and the black king can approach the pawn. If I stay in front of it, I can't escape the checks, except by going to the h-file. Then black would play Rf2 and I would have to defend my pawn again.

In reality, the computer announces mate in 28, maybe even less if allowed to run for longer. The key move after 67. Kh6 Rf2 was 68. Rxa2!. Black has two ways to try and save the game but neither works if I had the foresight to not place my king on h7.

What do you say about? I saw this game, and I did not notice a moment where you could lose.

Also something to beware of. Sometimes people bait the rook off the back rank just to play a checkmate. I have moved my queen to a8 let the a1 rook take it just to deliver back rank checkmate with another rook. (My king was already safe.)
