I'm curious about the tournament.  What (if any) rule is in play to make a player move his king in the opening?  Surely the best strategy is to just play normal chess, then walk you king down after winning tons of material.

*Edit

Oh I see.  Rule 2 is pretty vague though.  Also what if I, for example, castle on move 5, then move the king on the backrank before move 8?  Does it have to be to the 2nd rank?

waffllemaster

This seems like a very strong bongcloud opening :p

And of course I'm trying to get to the other side... best chance to do that is making my position better than yours.

I suppose it's the spirit of the thing... but wouldn't the tournament winner be the one who plays most conservatively and just tries to win material?

tazerdadog

That is exactly how I won the first game f the tournament, however, you are forgetting the intrensic value of the king as a fighting piece (between a rook and a minor in its own right.)  conservative play with the king could lead to playing "a king down"  which is disadvantageous in my opinion.  Greanted with queens and rooks flying around th board, running with the king would be rebuffed easily, so the king should play (in theory a support role at that time.  my $0.02.

the whole name thing has me confused.. bong hits a octamo i understand.  Get the king to other side using all rules save mating the opposing king?  Id play.  ............................exhale

Heh, I hadn't thought of that (due to no mates allowed).  I guess I'd still be wary of it because the king is still susceptible to forks and skewers, and in the middlegame I wouldn't rate it 4 due to being so slow.  I'd rate it a bit less than 3 actually.

bresando

his usual rating in an ending is roughly 5 (an active king there is as strong as a rook).

I really feel like in the future the rule should say "king developed to the second rank by move 8 and castling not allowed" since right now it's legal to play a normal opening, something which is clearly against the spirit of the whole thing.

having put in less then 5 minutes of analysis so far it would seem you would want to wolf pack your pieces around the king allowing the oppenents inability to mate to bouy the king up the ranks?  or is that no the nature of the bongcloud?  I am really trying to understand this as I tried to make or did make a varient with a similar theory of more king play...

bresando

I win this game because of white not moving his king by move 8. My opponent always played according to the rules in his 3 bongcloud games so far, so i guess he just forgot to count the moves here. The other game is still is progress.

To me, saying the king is worth 5 in the endgame is like saying the knight is worth 5 in the middle game.  It's true when they're very well posted, and only in certain situations is it possible.

I've never seen a value given (on wiki I think it gave a few different values).  But when looking at endgames and using the value of 4, my evaluations are not bad, so to my mind ~4 is correct.

Not sure what you mean by wolf pack the pieces, but assuming your opponent knows the objective (to get the king to the other side) then they aren't going to mindlessly attack the king, only stopping short of mate, bouy-ing the king up the board.

They'll likely aim to make a wall 1,2,3 or 4 (etc) ranks ahead of the king, which he wont be able to pass.  Any material won along the way makes this wall easier to maintain.

noted, thank you bresando
