Chess and Music!

I usually don't listen to music while I play chess, but the other day I used my iPod during a few games of OTB quick.

I listened to "He's a Pirate" from the Pirates of the Caribbean soundtrack, and I have to say that the music made the games feel like sword fights without the blood.

There are times when I listen to the Halo Soundtrack, Betoveen, and Mozart.

I remember once while my team and I were plaing our matches to figure out who was in what positon on the team, placing them from best to worst (board 1 to board 10, or however people that are on the team), I think it was the top 5 player slots that I trying to get into (witch I did happen to make Varsity :P) and I made terrible move and at that exact moment my music started to play violins. lol, it did not help my mood. It was a good game though.

Classical. Chamber music to symphonic, doesn't matter. Mozart and Beethoven, through Mahler and even some past Shostakovich. (Must be predominantly tonal and interesting.) Often lesser known composers whose music was undeservedly overlooked.

Christian music...it keeps me calm and focused.

I love christian music. it always helps me to stay focused and relaxed, and helps me to calm down during a match, and during alot of difficult situations.

 Who are your favorites Rogue?

Mine are the standard...Casting crowns, Jeremy Camp.  Right now im really into Kutless, Red, Disciple, and Decyfer Down.  I was listening to some Grits, dc talk and Group 1 Crew and my daughters friends were getting into it and said they didnt think i liked rap.  As soon as i told them it was christian rap they suddenly didnt like it.

The disadvantages of youth...more worried about what your friends will think then being yourself.

I like to go to Youtube and play music while I am on Chess.com.  I have
always loved Rock and Roll, Country, and Motown.  Lately I am really into Classical
and Jazz.  They are both incredibly advanced forms of music.  I love Jimmy
Buffett and the Canadian Band Rush, the latter is one of the most gifted bands
of all-time and yet they aren't in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.  Laughable.
I have read that Baroque music (about 60 beats per second) helps the brain
with learning skills.                                                                                                                        I play acoustic guitar myself and now am learning the keyboards.  I am not
a natural musician but it is a fun hobby to practice while watching hours of television.
I saw The Rolling Stones in concert back in the day but now I go to shows
like Sir James Galway.

i mostly listen to sub-groups of metal like Tool (considered prog metal), Faith No More (early rap-metal/eclectic), various Grunge metal bands- alice in chains and stone temple pilots mostly, pantera (thrash metal), and yes i still listen to old metallica and guns and roses.  i saw pachelbel's canon mentioned beautiful music but not good for my chess.  i play slow and positional mostly but try crazy tactics when it looks fun.

kissinger

i like listening to classical music in the background, especially Mozart....i also like the music of Palestrina to be playing...i guess i'm "old school"...

Having a song in your head during a chess game is pretty much never a good thing. To my surprise I see some club players at tournaments wearing headphones who apparently think the music is helping them, yet I have never seen a Grandmaster listening to music during a tournament game. Shouldn't that be a clue to the club players?

jpd303

you might not be allowed to listen to headphones at big tournaments because you could cheat with radio transmissions or something.  people have been accused of stranger methods of foul play, i.e. messages in yogurt and hypnotism.

I like to listen to a very broad mix of music.  Because chess positions can be either quiet, boring, exciting, tactical, positional, simple or complicated, I think that limiting yourself to one type of music while playing is a bit... well... limiting!

Unless, of course, one certain band or genre of music helps you concentrate better in general.  In that case, full speed ahead with it!  But I feel that a wide spectrum might suit a chess player's game a tad better.  :)
