Chess Photography

Hey everyone!

I've done a few chess shots in the past few months and created a set for them on my Flickr.  I'd be very interested in hearing what actual chess players think about them as well as any suggestions for improvement, or even new chess shot concepts (if I recreate an idea of yours, I will give credit on the photo's page).  Here is the link:

If any of you have a Flickr, feel free to add me and I will do the same.  Thanks!

Very nice.

Excellent. Ahh, the ever reliable mini maglite. Laughing

I like these a lot.  (I've taken chess photos myself, and I think it is pretty difficult to keep them interesting, especially when concentrating on the pieces and board.)

Anyway, being a Valley Girl myself, I'm thinking that some of these were shot in Los Angeles.  One looks like the Santa Monica chess park (table and palm trees that I recognize, maybe).  Another one I swear was shot on the bluff at Loyola Marymount University (LA basin and Santa Monica Mountains in the background).  Am I right about that?

I'd say my favorite is the one with the chessboard and the ceramic coffee cup.

Good work.  Would you consider posting your photos right here on chess.com?

Other chess locations you might consider for you photos:

1. Tang's Donut on Sunset in Silver Lake

2.  Fifth St. Dick's on Degnan in Leimert Park

3.  Plummer Park in West Hollywood

4.  The Laguna Beach chess tables on PCH

If you're doing requests, I'd love to see a photo combining chess and the WD Concert Hall downtown...or maybe chess and the Water and Power fountains...or chess and the Watts Towers...just a thought.

Thanks everyone!

@qixel- the one with the bokeh was in Diamond Bar (right north of the OC).  Some good suggestions too, thanks.  Suggesting Tangs is kinda funny, I drive by that place all the time!

Good stuff!

Question: is Inside Chess a magazine or something? Well of course it appears to be, but I haven't seen it around. I know there's The Week in Chess, New in Chess and Chess Life, but had not heard of Inside Chess before.

As for the OP (original poster), I actually do have a chess photography project in mind. I wanted to take a photo of each piece on each square. I had done this before with a pretty bad camera, but it would look better with a better camera and better lighting.

So how much would it cost for 752 photos?

I would actually buy a book like the above if it had color photos of the standard tournament chess pieces on each sqare of the standard green and off-white tournament board.

White king a1, white king a2, white king a3, etc, etc, etc.

Inside Chess magazine was a magazine I worked for ran by GM Yasser Seirawan for about 12 years.  Sadly that dang internet killed it.

Love these photos James. Would it be possible to save any of the images for my chess photo album or to show on the big screens in my school?
