I do not know if this counts, but in the video game Shining Force II, the characters are forced to do battle with an army of chess pieces in order to make progress.  Aside from the bonus stages and the final battles, this is one of the battles that gave gamers the most trouble.

How about vibrating chess boards so the pieces move around on their own like those old electric football games?
