Rock. You can put it where ever you want at the start of the game, and it doesn't do anything, just sits there blocking one square.
I would not want to change existing chess at all. I would want it to be a new game.
If I were to have a new chess piece it would be a piece called ghost.
It would look like a speech bubble or balloon. It would move like a rook but can only move or take a piece by jumping over another piece or pieces, either the opponent’s piece or pieces or own piece(s) (a bit like the canon in Chinese chess mentioned but the piece can “jump over” one or more pieces, and can jump over its own pieces). Unlike any other piece on the board it cannot be “blocked” by placing a piece it its way so it relies on a piece to be infront or at the side of it to move. Also unlike any other piece it cannot give check, but if it can take any of the opponent’s pieces except the opponent’s ghost piece. The ghost piece can only be taken if it is next to an opponent’s piece, so generally is unlikely to be taken. At the beginning of the game the ghost piece would be next to either of the rooks probably with no pawn infront of it.
Or may be at the beginning of the game is on the SAME square as one of the rooks. And may be it can also later occupy the same square of any of its own existing pieces. For example move to the same square one of its knight is on.
Τhe chancellor and the arhbishop are very interesting pieces and i think that version of chess that Capablanca invented is great!maybe similar with chess 960 like Fisher's invention...
if i had to invent a new piece,i would put (always in a board of 8*8)a piece cold "the cannon",2 of those,where i would place them in front of the pawn structure,in the b and g file.
They would move like the King,but not one square,but 3 squares...
The points of their material would be mysterious,but i think close to 5-6 should be fair.....!

Here is a piece to ponder.
I call the piece the Deacon. It is slightly better than a pawn, but weaker than a knight.
The Deacon moves like a knight diagonally, two squares diagonally and one square in a 90 degrees direction diagonally or one square diagonally and two squares in a 90 degrees direction.
If a piece is in the path, the Deacon will jump over like the knight.
The Bomber. It moves like a rook. Just move it into the enemy position and say, "Boom!" The Bomber and all the pieces in a one square radius get destroyed.

This is fun, but the rules need to stay the same so that centuries of chess are the same. They came about due to make things balanced.
At one time, before the Europeans took it over, it was the King and the King's Advisor (rather than the queen). That makes more sense. When did a Queen lead a strong force into Battle? But you can buy sets like that if you wish.

It would be one piece (like the King or Queen) It would be the JESTER.
It can move like a Pawn, Knight, Rook, or Bishop.
The catch is,the piece has a tab on it that you switch on each move. It rotates through those moves (P, N, R, B). It starts with a Pawn move, after that the next time you move it it has to move like a Knight moves. After that move the next time you use it it has to move like a Rook, then a Bishop, and then back to pawn.

Once the 40th move has been made by black the Crazy Bouncing Ball Armageddon Showdown shall begin!
Each player must call in their new phenomena "Squire" which is a player at least half your age and half your height. Each squire places a new piece called the Vortex of Doom which moves like an electron around a proton. Everywhere at the same time!
Meanwhile, the two chess players have to arm wrestle across the board while the quantum battle rages beneath their fists. Once the armwrestle is over, the loser must count to 3, and meanwhile, the winner must grab the opponents king and run off with it. Now the chase can start, and the two squires are allowed to throw obstacles at the players chasing one another around the room, while the crowd goes WILD!
The game ends once one of the players feints in exhaustion and the other can claim the win by climbing the chess board and shout.
This would be good because it adds doping to chess like every other sport, and it would never be a draw.
I like the atomic piece in atomic chess but its been done. So I want a Ninja in there. He appears as an option when promoting. I'm still working on how he moves or what he does. But whatever it is, its gonna hurt.

That's already been done in Atomic Chess. The rules are the same but each player has an atomic piece assigned to their ranks which they can detonate at any point in the game.
What about adding a cannon? Like the chinese chess, it must jump over a piece to attack. Nothing will happen to the piece it jumps over, but it will land on the square where the attacked piece is. It moves like a rook too and the only diffrence is the way it attacks.
