That is a very nice puzzle. :)  I wonder how many of these puzzles are just setup to be cool...and how many actually occurred in real games.

Pretty fun, but i can't figure out the movement pattern of the lamp shades.  Are those new pieces to chess?

It's a great way to explain (show) the term "zugzwang" rarely spoking out side off chess!

I ain't on about a draw, I'm on about forcing the openent in to changing his Queen, which is definetly Zugzwang!

i was gonna say, "why don't u use that nice 3-move fork right there?" then i realized, "that's not a forced fork, is it..." that's a great solution.

and I like the pun. "Fork you!" lol.

you're right it's not zugswang but it's also not a draw, after black recaptures the Q white can play Kf3 with a winning K and P ending Wink

Avatar of thegab03

Sorry  MM78 but for me it's Zugzwang up to the point where white takes the Queen, show me how black could avoid the capturing of the Queen, all the 5 moves are forced, Black does not want do play does moves, but has no choice!

Avatar of MM78

Gab, you're absolutely right that all the moves are forced, but the essence of zugswang is that the side to move is not in immediate danger in the position in which they find themselves. In other words they would be better off if it were the other side's move, examples are king and pawn endings where whichever side moves loses.

In this particular case I think you would agree that at no stage would black be better off if it was white's move.

here's a a quote from wikipedia:

The term zugzwang is frequently used in chess. A player whose turn it is to move who has no move that does not worsen their position is said to be in zugzwang (Soltis 2003:78). Thus every move would make their position worse, and they would be better off if they could pass and not move. Sometimes different chess authors use the term zugzwang in different ways (Flear 2004:11-12).

I think what you are pointing at is Zugzwang reciprocale!
