Okay, but why so many positions on this post look legal and normal but they are illegal?

Because that's the kind of position most readers of this thread are hoping to see. Otherwise, there's very little challenge in explaining what makes the position illegal.

Can you explain why my position at #7899 is illegal, if it is?

Do you need any more than this?

Leither123

Accidentally swapped the position of the bishops

MARattigan

This enough then?

Leither123

I don't know how I forgot that black's bishop starts on that square

Leither123

I need to stop making last second modifications that I don't check over. The original concept was supposed to have the white bishop in the corner, but I thought it didn't look good enough and shifted the bishops to the center.

This has already happened with at least 3 other positions that I posted.

The last one is still legal!

How? (Or were you talking about the last last one?)

It (#7923) certainly is. But I think Leither will find another modification to make it illegal.

Yes.

MARattigan

Yes, of course!

Arisktotle

There is no indication that Leither believed(s) that #7923 was legal.

@Arisktotle

I was havering, but you were probably talking about the current last one rather than the last last one, which generally, but rather confusingly in that sort of instance, refers to the one before.

(Who the $%&£ invented English?)

To clarify #7929 was me acknowledging dimness after #7927, but you popped in between.

This is a common trick puzzle, because it appears in a semi-famous book, but is it possible for this position to be reached with white to move?

sorry for replying like 7 years late but 1. Nf3 2. e6 3. Ng1 4. e5: white's turn

Why would you even want to repeat an answer that has been posted by others at least a dozen times?

idk

I think Leither believes you. But just in case...

I might not check over my positions sometimes, but I can still make something that is illegal:
