The worst chess move EVER!

Sort:
LydiaBlonde

Look this short game:

The second move of the black - the worst move possible in chess in general! Surprised It' from an old booklet in Russian (translated into Croatian) Conbinations and Traps in openings. And an autor wrote (maybe it is only an "urban legend") that it was actually played in a tournament! Black want to play Qe7, however he take a king by mistake... Tongue out

You must have been playing a 500

I've actually played this against someone (I was white). It was a long time ago in a school tournement. Needless to say I went through to the next round very quickly.

lol...that is the worst possible move EVER in that situation!Laughing

I think I know this one. White was talking about a magnet under the king or something for a while so black wanted to check the bottom. He HAD to move the king with only one legal move which leads to a mate.

The urban legend improved by rumors! Laughing

There's an article here about it. http://www.chess.com/article/view/shortest-game-ever-recorded the players were 1600 and 1700.

Explains a lot. White should have been chucked out the tournament, very unsporting. Black should have j' EXCUSE
markkuhar83
that is a colossal disaster.  it violates all the basics of the game.

Nice, I didn't see it before! However, I suspect from the begining that it is only "an urban legend", spreading as legends did! I found it in the booklet, printed the first time in  CCCP (Soviet union!) in 1960's!

@onnGee: Oh, yes? Do you know something even worser!? I don't belive! SealedLaughing
Masterful_Forfeit

Doesn't get much worse...

but  LydiaBlonde 's game also occured as a recorded tournament game; Masterful_Forfeit's game is only one of the first things novices are taught (often with 1.f3 instead) - was the latter officially recorded in a tournament or match? If not, then as the yanks say - close, but no cigar.

streetfighterchess84

that is bad, that had to be a learners move lol

MapleDanish

actually, here is a shorter game: http://www.exeterchessclub.org.uk/Praxis/simple.html

So, you claim that 1.... resign is worser move then 2... Ke7? Wink

About short games - an another example from a real OTB tournament:

What happened? White was a "caffe" player, proud to not spent more then 15 mins for 40 moves. When a game started, it was 18:00 or so, he make a move and then went to a caffe. He come back in 19:45 to finish the game. However, he didn't know that the time limit is shortened, from 2 hours for 40 moves to 90 minutes... Surprised

So, the next candidate for a worser move in the chess history:

2. go to a caffe. Laughing

this needs pedantry [shortest possible game - 1. resigns but this is recorded as walkover - maybe there was a time it wasn't :) ] - so - read the title as "shortest recorded game ever ending in checkmate - but also include games endings resignation owing to seeing a mate-in-x line, with the "resign" replaced by  one of the said mate-in-n sequences.

Isnt 1 F4 considered to be the worst chess opening ever?

I saw someone create a problem once in which every possible move was mate except for one, and the one forced your opponent to mate you.
