What strange chess rules can you think up?

Sort:

When ever you win a chess game by tricks, traps, time whoring or swindling.

You should be forced to wear the letter "C"  on your shirt & profile like the novel the Scarlet Letter.

The "C" on your shirt & profile will stand for "Charlatan"

You will be exposed to public humiliation in the chess community.

X_PLAYER_J_X

In an over the board tournament game you should stop moving 1 move before checkmate.

Once you have announced mate in 1.

An arbitrary should run to your board and say the words "Finish Him"

The arbitrary should be dressed like the above picture.

Once you have mated him.

The arbitrary should respond with the word "Fatality!"

X_PLAYER_J_X

When ever you win an Over the Board Tournament game you should start dancing around the table.

The Dance you should do is "The Worm"

The music you should have playing in the background is the below music:

"You Look Fly 2 Day"

roll the dice to move a piece

Care to explain how that would work?

I move pieces by lifting them with one hand and release them on the square I want to move to. Should I roll the die so it touches the piece and with enough force to make the piece move to the square I want instead?

Roll the dice on a square on the middle of the board. Pick any piece and move however many squares you have gotten. Kings can move twice the number the dice give, but can only be used every other 8 turns. You win if you get rid of their king.

I have been playing family members and friends in asymmetrical 960 chess games. Another words it is the same rules as chess 960 except the starting position is random for both sides. White and black pieces do not have the same starting setup. I think this is a very fun way to play. One side may have a better starting position, but I compare it to a card game where one side may have a better hand. It still comes down to the way you play your pieces.

Dice?

Quickstart Chess

All the pieces can jump over the pawns of their colour in the first turn.

Assassin's Creed Chess

During the game you can declare that one of your bishops is a Templar (bishop+knight). The other one is the Assassin: It remains a bishop but it is now controlled by your opponent.

My Kingdom for a Horse Chess

The King can ride an adjacent Knight. It moves (Edit: and captures) as a Knight as long as it is with it.

Edit: One-time only. The Knight dies after the move and the King stays where the Knight has been after the move.

Variant: The Queen can ride too.

Chess Within Chess

Everytime there is a capture a standard game is prepared. The attacker plays White and the opponent plays Black. If White wins the capture in the initual game proceeds as usual. If Black wins the attacking piece of the first game is destroyed.

This can be expanded as desired.

Disgusting Chess

Everytime you capture a piece you must lick it slowly while looking at your opponent in the eye. If the opponent looks away, s/he loses the game.

incorrectname

cannot capture pawns

illeagal moves alllowed but opponent may not take king, only checkmates

incorrectname

if white plays c4, the squares e4, d4, e5, and d5 blow up and no piece can goon those squares------>

can capture own pieces

Get rid of the chess player that causes trouble in a site instead of eliminating the site, maybe one warning.Wink

I agree.  No dice.  Remember what Einstein said: "God doesn't play chess with the universe."

Dice?  That was already done with the earliest versions of the game in India.

Here is a simple one:  Upon promotion, the new piece can immediately make one move.

Wow -- that would make advancing pawns way more valuable.  Finally, the days of the foot soldier as cannon fodder would be over -- let's hear it for the proletariat!

I really, really like the "secret passages to other squares" idea proposed by a member in this thread earlier. Like a portal or warp zone.

Never mind. The more I think about practically using it, it seems like it wouldn't be any good. You'd have a perfect position until some weaker numbskull uses the secret passage cheapo to gain an advantage.

Cue Nimzowitsch, "Why must I...."

I have played with a portal variant. The rules I use are:

Rooks cannot capture pieces or get captured. Rooks lose their initial movement. Rooks can move to any square another piece of the same color can move to. Rooks is not allowed to move when you are in check. A piece can move to a rook and continue in the same direction from the other rook of the same color.

Note: Castling counts as both a rook and king's move, so castling is no longer legal. Pieces can move through rooks regardless of color. Knights can also move to a rook and continue in the same direction from the other rook (meaning that they will move in an L-shape twice during the same turn).

Well, that makes perfect sense.

^ Go proles. It's your birthday. no more cannon fodder.

So strange means foreign.

For this we'll need to enlist the help of extraterrestrials.

One moment. BRB. Finger's glowing. This can only mean one thing:

There's a transmission signal coming through now.

Really?

Okay, got it. Don't do anything I wouldn't do E.T. I'll relay the rule to the rest of the Earthlings down here. Take it easy!

Back.

He said one strange chess rule is (and this is a very crude translation), "You can only zilendroafsnixt on the krilnstorn." Nowhere else.

Here is my best so far:   Queens can move like bishops, Rooks, AND KNIGHTS!
