As Spock would say this would be illogical;.-/
What would aliens do?
They would probably hit upon the basics about the less numerous pieces being more important, but they might also allow pawns to move backwards or sideways.
if they have the technology to come to earth, that would make them somewhat intelligent, no ? so they wouldn't waste time with chess, right ?
Look at what children do when they don't know the rules. They put the black pieces in the dark squares and the white pieces in the light squares. Maybe aliens would do that.
I don't think they'd figure out how the horsey moves. I'd have to use my piggies to calculate the exact odds, but one of them is at the market now
Sometimes my piggies are at the market and sometimes they stay home, it really depends on the piggy. But I can't do an accurate calculation of the odds aliens would figure out the rules of chess without using all my digits and piggies
I disagree with the notion that aliens would know less numerous peices are more vauable, because for all we know that might be a very human concept; they may very well think the oppisite beleiving the pawns are the most usseful thats why you need so many.
When my kid saw a piece set for the first time she thought that pawns were children. I think that aliens would notice that pieces come in different sizes and try to draw some conclusions from that.
There are reports of little grey aliens and tall grey aliens. Maybe the aliens will think that the pawns are them?

Let's say you give a chess set as a gift to extraterrestrials who have paid Earth a visit. They take the set to their home world, choosing to remain ignorant of the rules of play. What are the odds the aliens will invent rules that are identical to Earth chess?
