When I was nine.  I would play occasionally for fun at school, but I was pretty bad.  Then I took it up last year.

I don't remember exactly when, but it was around the early 1990's.  My father taught me how to play, because he was sick of me winning every other game we would play.

I wasn't very good at it, until I joined the chess club in highschool.  I'm still not very good, but I was able to beat my dad in 8 moves.  He was so upset (yet proud I should point out) that we would never play again.

In Junior High School when I was in 7th grade in the late 1960's.  A few guys brought chess sets to school and played during lunch, etc.  It looked like something I wanted to be able to play.  Bought a copy of Fred Reinfeld's "The Complete Chessplayer" and learned from that.   And I never beat Reinfeld Wink

I learned to play much better about a month ago XD. By my dad, he was in a chess club for a while and then left the club, he learned by watching how others play. I'm 13 right now and was taught a bit by my dad, and Chessmaster 10th Edition. I beat him in the same month but he wasn't really focused XD.

November last year I bought a cheap chess set whilst on schoolies and was setting it up when a friend said he’d verse me. I told him I didn’t know how to play so he sat down and started to teach me. We now play regularly online with him acting as a bit of a mentor.

I haven’t beaten him yet but I will eventually and that victory will be sweet having worked so hard for it. At least that’s what I keep telling myself. Wink

my dad taught me when i was around 5 or so, he clobbered me every time i played him, and i never played anyone else. my cello teacher rekindled my interest because he plays and he challenged me to a chess game on facebook, so i decided to learn as much as i can so i could beat him and stumbled across this site. now i can't stop playing :)

A friend of mine taught me how to play chess...and I taught him how to play checkers 7 years ago. Since then I've never played checkers, and I haven't had a chance to beat my friend because he moved house...one day I'll catch up...

I was 9 when i learned.. Although i wish i would have tooken up the gaem when i was a lot younger ( 4-5). I lost precious time to develop my chess mind.

I was taught by my grandfather...

I didnt start taking the game seriously untill i was fourteen, however... I am currently 15 and can beat my "mentor" almost every time. :)
