Hello all

I faced this position after opening with a Caro-Kann defence, and I'm wondering the best response would be, I played Bd7 and found myself having difficulty moving the minor pieces and castling, eventually losing the game. Thanks in advance!

I play this g4 as white quite often, Bd7 is a good move and I think is preferred by the computer. The point is you say to white that his g pawn is now a long term weakness. You should play for the move c5 eg e6 then c5 to give the c6 square to your knight and free your game. Qb6 can follow and you have pressure on d4 making it slightly awkward for white to develop, similar to a French advance position. Bf3 is pointless IMO as white just goes f3 so the alternative is Bg6 then h4 is likely and you should go h5 rather than h6 which is also ok for black. The line I enjoy is Bg6 h4 h6 h5 Bh7 e6 pawn sac fxe6 Bd3 Bxd3 Qxd3 and it is very awkward for black to develop the kingside pieces and white threatens Qg6+ Ne2 Bf4 restricting black quite badly.
