A checkmate can result in a draw

This is my first time posting. I just played a game blindfold against a Level 3 computer. I couldn't believe how bad the computer was at the endgame, but the game ended in a way I'd never imagined: 50 moves after the computer last took a piece, it checkmated me.

Draw, by the 50-move rule.

Is the computer having a laugh? Why is the computer so bad at the endgame, and is it really just coincidence that it ended the game in such an interesting way?

50 moves without a pawn move or a capture is a draw under the rules.

In this case, the draw rule appears to have superceded the checkmate.
