A Draw Against A 1900s Opponent : Could I Actually Win ?

In this Rapid 15|10 minute game, initially I didn't plan to trade pieces to simplify the game. But when the situation did not give me clear advantage, I was forced to trade pieces, esp opponent's light-square bishop that looked dangerous. So, it had to be determined in endgame.

In the endgame, I tried to be precise to get winning position. But, eventually, it concluded with a draw.

I still think, probably I was not precise enough in certain moves that I could not achieve winning position in that endgame.

In writing this thread, I haven't used Game Review by Stockfish, because there is only one game review per day available for me. I have used it for other game today.

So, I am open to your thoughts, guys, esp about the endgame.

32 Ke5 was winning.

Your intuition was correct! You have a big, possibly winning, advantage in the endgame, mostly because of your much more active king. Here is one suggestion

I feel like at move 15 you could have played different, maybe pawn b3? It seems like you had an advantage in the center and made the game even at that point.

*I know you said end game just thought I’d mention my opinion :-D

i am no endgame expert and i am still just a "dumb 1000" but i agree now with txgyc, i was seeing if ke5 was playable around move ~36

(it's not)

Nice attention from a player there.

Lol I'm 1400 and no games end as solidly as this. Well played.

Thanks for giving thoughts guys.

During the game, I was more focused to the pawns at the right's side, trying to win at least 1 pawn there.

When thinking of switching my king to the left side, I thought opponent's king would easily clear my pawns at the right side and thus enabled his pawn to promote first. So, I didn't do that, and chose to stick to the right side, although had to be satisfied with a draw.

Only after analyzing this game, I think, like @tygxz and @Laskersnephew said, the correct move at 32 is Ke5.

Btw, does Stockfish say so too ?

Now, with this Ke5, black could have played 32... Kg6 or g6. So, this would lead my king hunt the pawns at the left side, while black's king would have cleared my pawns at the right side for his pawn to promote. This would be become a matter of whose pawn would promote first. In my calculation of post-game analysis, his pawn would have promoted first, but mine would have promoted too, with position that I think, would have given me advantage.

Thanks again for your thoughts. I appreciate.

No, I think you definitely promote first. Black needs Kg6-f5-g4-xh4-g3-xg2 before he can even start to push his h pawn. The problem is with your K on e5 and pawn on h4 he can't play ...Kf5. So, if black plays Kg6 you can just play Ke6 gaining time before moving over to capture his pawns. 32. Ke5 Kg6 33. Ke6 Kh6 now if black ever moves the g pawn you end up just winning the pawns on the kingside instead because he gives up control of f6 which will allow you to shoulder his king away with your king.

32. Ke5 Kg6 33. Ke6 Kh6 34. Kd5 and the point is that if black doesn't play g5 then you just go gobble the a and b pawns then push your a pawn. Black is much slower. If he does then play will be 34... g5 35. g3 gxh4 36. gxh4 Kg6 37. Ke6 and now black can't save his kingside pawn, giving you an outside passer which I'm sure you know how to win with.

Thanks for your insights. I have analyzed that possibility, but Idk, I am not sure, my mind was not fit enough to do such calculation.

As for you thoughts on move 11. Well, it's a matter of deçision based on my intuition. That time, I avoided any complication, yes because of my opponet's rating. In other ocassion, I don't mind complicated game.

With your version, though, the game would have become more interesting where all major and minor pieces were still in the field for a fierce battle. I have a post of that kind of game here : https://www.chess.com/forum/view/game-showcase/when-a-combination-play-runs-smoothly-with-an-immediate-checkmate-as-the-end-result

I have just seen the game review by Stockfish.

As some of you guys here say here, Stockfish says : 32. Kg5 was a miss. It should be : Ke5.

Apart from this miss, though, I am glad seeing the statistic saying that both sides are equal.

I'm no expert at chess but why did you play 11. e5? Doesn't it make more sense to play 11.d5? I would think opening up the e file when your opponent hasn't castled, and you have a rook on e1 would be better than opening the opening the diagonal for your opponent's bishop.  It also contains a trap because black isn't actually winning a pawn after 11.d5 exd5 12. exd5 Nxd5 because you have 13.Nxc4.  Then after 11...dxe5 it must be better to take with the pawn to avoid trades while maintaining a space advantage. You will always have threats like the greek gift for your opponent to calculate now that he no longer has a knight on f6.

To me, it seems like you decided to trade down because of your opponent's rating rather than because it was the best plan in the position.

From the game review by Stockfish, my move 11. e5 was the best. But the move 12. Nxe5 was a mistake, which should be dxe5.

But, I appreciate your opinion which I also mention in the other place of my reply.

Now I can only imagine if Hikaru Nakamura watch this endgame and then react to my miss at 32. Kg5 like he did in his game vs Wesley So here : https://youtu.be/QOt9Ynjnv68   😀

I am more of a fan of Wesley So, but we know Nakaruma. 😀

One endgame lesson we can all learn from this is that very often there is no substitute for counting!

Well, but quite often we also fail to learn from the past.  😔 We said to ourselves : "next time better, more patient, more precise, etc...". But in reality, we failed to do so. 😀

Previously, I also missed the chance to win, as you can see in another post of my game : https://www.chess.com/forum/view/game-analysis/a-miss-to-win-against-higher-rated-opponent

I beat a 2000s rated player this morning : https://www.chess.com/forum/view/game-showcase/i-beat-a-2000s-player

No serious mistake this time, got an advantage, maintained it until the opponent resigned for checkmate threat in the follow-up moves.

I have told you elsewhere that this is a general forum in which readers are from all over the world. So, unless for certain reasons, we are expected to write in a language that is acceptable, understable by all readers/users.
