19. Nxe6 fxe6 20. Qxe6+ Kh8 21. Qxe7 looks good to me

Well played. I used to play that line (3. Nc3) but I've switched to the 3. Nf3 line now and I find it better. Thats all :-)

During the match, I did look at this line, however, the inbetween move  Nxe6 bf6! loses the piece. (i think :D)

Thanks for the feed back!

I know 3. Qa5 is book, but it seems to ask for trouble and loss of tempo to me.

8...c6 looks fine to me. It adds more influence to d5, which his knight would love to come to sometime, it's consistent with Nbd7 and it clears a line of retreat for his queen if things get messy (which he makes use of on move 10).

19. Nxe6 Bf6 23.Nxd8 Bxe5 etc leaves white up a pawn.

Your pawn on c2 was hanging for 11 moves. I kept thinking "ok NOW black will just scoop it up" but he never did.

As has been noted nxd8 wins for white...Remember an in between move doesn't work if the other person has already attacked the same piece you are attacking(as a general rule of course). but congrats on a good win.

and even worst than being a solid pawn ahead.  if you take on e5 then nxf7! with more material falling.

Well actually fox, my bishop on b3 protected it the entire game.

It's a good game. In fact, you're a little ahead pretty much the whole game. You just make two errors. The first is not seeing - or rather discounting - 19. Nxe6 which leads to a large advantage for white. The second is when you put your rook into a cage with 38. Rb5. The desperate 40. b4 then seals it for black.

It's interesting that, for me, white played the better moves throughout the game. However, two errors turned a promising game into a defeat.
