Beginner Game Analysis

Hi all,

I know I've posted several similar threads, but I feel that each time, I do learn something. Basically, I'm a beginner chess player looking to improve.  I feel that my game is coming along, but I certainly need a lot of work, and I can usually take something valuable away from the comments of stronger players.  Below is a game that I played today with comments on my thought process on each move.

Please feel more than welcome to offer and suggestions, insights, advice, or whatever it may be to help me. (That's what this is for, no?) Smile

i think you play well here, all pieces developed and play towards the center its all good. Your opponent makes alot of bad moves. 4.Nb5 is offcourse just bogus. Your response is fine, but theres no hurry to evict this knight, it is misplaced here anyway, so just wait with a6 untill you feel you need it and focus on developement.

On move 11 you should capture the pawn, to open up your own bishop, since you got threats on b2 and Bh3+ this should grant you a pawn, and some positional bonuses. Castling is also fine as f5 could be answered with d5.

17...exd3 to open up more lines or Qf2+ immediatly is better.

18...Qf2 would be better yes, grabbing a pawn, and further comprimising his king position.

22...e3 I suppose this should end the game pretty quickly.

All in all I think you played this game very well, all pieces developed, and activly trying to open the game for attack.

Thank you for all of your input, Timmy. Why is 22...e3 such a strong move? I'm afraid you either meant something else, or I'm completely overlooking something Embarassed.

Also, was my move 6. Bg4 a bad one? I tend to do it a lot, and I feel that if my opponent were to play Be2, all it really did was develop my opponent's bishop and cost me a tempo.

Thank you again!!

I thought you played really well also, although, like me (I miss a lot of mates and mate threats and the like), you need to think more about how to attack the king when you have a great position like you did (moves 17 and 18).  Also, may be more cognizant of your pawns safety towards the end of the game?  It seems like he could have taken the c5 pawn on a couple of occasions (mainly move 29).  I know I tend to bleed pawns later in the game, especially when I get ahead.  Good game, and great early development!

Move 22: "Am I not seeing something, or should he have played Qxd7?"

You're not seeing something. 22. Qxd7 Rad8 and he cannot move his Queen off the d-file without allowing Qf2 mate.

Eg: 22. Qxd7 Rad8 23. Bc4+ Kh8 24. Qe6 Qf2 mate.

e3 is sort of like a deflection move, trying to get the queen to move.

The bishop cant be taken because of Rd8, and if Rf1 you got Qc3+ for starters, if he takes the pawn you got Re8 pinning the bishop, and after the queen moves Bb4 should then win the bishop, third leaving the pawn there altogether almost creates a mating net around the king after Rd8.

The move 6.Bg4 is not really that good, as white should have responded with Be2, and you dont want to trade your bishop for his as yours is superior, so youll want to retreat the bishop. So yes, unless your point with the move was to trade the bishops, youve only lost a temp with the move.
