[beginners level] quick win with French defense. Pls analyze.

At 1400-1500 level, I think many e4 players will run into big trouble against the French defense.

What I like to know is what my (black's) mistakes are. At what point was white able to take over the game? So, what should I do better against higher rated players if I play French defense.

Thanks, VeeDeeVee

after bb5 black has a pretty normal french trick with nxe5.

You actually had a very nice combo. White fell into a very common trap that black has in the French.

Usually even beginners-intermidate level players fall for this trap becuase it not overly seen alot. Its a trap that ends up winning a center pawn so they sometimes don't realize it.

Usually black plays 5...Qb6 thats most popular move by french players. However, some French players play the move 5...Bd7 setting a trap for their opponent sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't work. However, 5...Bd7 usually does tranpose so its not a bad move. Eventually you will play Bd7. Its just a move order switch really.

The reason the trap works with the move 5...Bd7 is because it gives white the chance to pinn the knight. Some Players like to pinn knights they get so super excited and are like Wooo Hooo I'm going to pin the knight well. As soon as they pin it. Your trap has been set. Nxe5 and no matter what they do weather they take the knight or the bishop you will still be up 1 center pawn. I showed you the diagram below so you can see how black ends up winning the pawn.

If you play 5...Qb6 than they can't pinn the knight becuase your queen will take lol. So thats why some people play 5...Bd7 just to be sneaky set a trap. An it works usually works alot you can win alot of games like that. An its not a bad move either so its not like your wasting any time playing it.

I have played both 5...Qb6 and 5...Bd7  they are very nice move's for sure. Nothing wrong with them they are like very highly used Qb6 is more popular. However, I like setting the trap as well with Bd7 so yeah.

So the fact you didnt play Nxe5 doing the trap was a slight inaccuracy, but not the end of the world.

Another move I saw that seemed interesting was instead of the move 10...Bc4 I was wondering about the move 10...Ba6 just sitting the bishop back so it can't be hit any more its long range piece so its just as powerful on a6 than c4. You played your bishop to c4 in the game than white ended up kicking it around and it did end up on a6 eventually. However, You could of played it their with out letting white get all the tempo's.

That was the only 2 things I saw. It seems like almost a perfect game played their very impressive for sure.

@ Tigerpower: Thanks for your comments !! Why not trading Queens? I was already up in material  + it wins an extra pawn. What would've been a better move?

@ Logan & XPlayerJX:  Nice....I'll remember that one Laughing.

"Why not trading Queens?"

If I play under 1600 players, gain an advantage, face no threat of check or checkmate, etc... then why take the best slugger out of the game?

That's like removing a pitcher who has so far pitched a no hitter, and it's not the 7th inning.

you know looking at this a bit more. i think instead of bc5. Bb4 looks a lot better. how can white finish development? black can always follow up with ne7 heading for f5 and attacking the bishop. dunno if its perfect but sure looks like white has big problems

i also agree about the queen trade. just qc7 with tempo followed by e5 or ne4 looks better. white is falling apart
