bishops or knights?

"i mean like there has 2 be some difference on the points scale"

According to Lary Kauffman's acclaimed The Evaluation of Material Imbalances the inherent different is less than 0.02 pawns, which means positional considerations (like an open or closed board) outweigh any theoretical difference in piece values.

"there is no right or wrong ... i will take bishops."

There are always grey areas, but in most positions the four minor pieces on the board are not equal, and having a hard preference for bishops or knights will lead to losses.

yea..  that makes sense, its like having favoritism for cars and airplanes.. sometimes you need a car, sometimes you need an airplane...
nerdie
i'll take the bishops. but that depends on what the position of the game needs.

knights would be my favorite pieces in the begining but at the end they can't 2 knights can't checkmate

:) i've tried

rich I'm gonna come over to the UK and slap you. We talked about this before!
Lord-Svenstikov
rich, a bishop pair is by far the best. One bishop and one knight is worse than two knights as the opponent can just go on the opposite colour from the bishop and it will not be able to touch them.
King_William
OK maybe I'll just sent Lord_Svenstikov over to slap you! No continent for him to cross...
King_William
Good for you.

A Bishop may transverse the board in one move, while a knight is limited to 2 forward at a time. In the games I play as a rule, a bishop is stronger. However, if you like a closed position, like a French or a King's Indian, a knight can be stronger.

Fried liver attack?

The pieces are as strong as the mind that moves them

rich> Didn't think two bishops could mate.

Sure they can, with the help of their king. Check out this endgame where I mate with a king and two bishops against a king and four pawns. A bishop and knight can also mate a lone king with some difficulty, but two knights cannot.

Skillz88

Bishops hav more movement, knights r annoying as they can fork easier...

note this: which piece do u move first, knight or bishop... most ppl say knight so theortically, knights r more popular!!

When you get yourself into a position where you have 2 bishops and no king you be sure to let us all know about it.

Exactly

I'd prefer the bishops in an open position.
Knights are better for closed.

You also can't checkmate with two knights and a king.

Bishop I think

K+2N can't checkmate a K, but K+2N can checkmate a K+P. An oft-forgetten endgame rule that sometimes bites the unwary.  ;)

I would choose my bishops i usually sacirfice horses to capture another opponets horse sometimes it works sometimes it doesnt, i guess it depends on the game set-up
