Catalan - Class C Player

Hey chess.com. Here's a game where I played the Catalan. I feel like I had a better position, and then I think I made some mistakes. I'd appreciate any help, criticism, or even just saying that something I did was stupid (as long as you explain why).

Edit: I feel like I should mention that this was in the Under 1800 section. I could never tie for the championship in an open section.

Good game. Sorry you offered a draw, the endgame could be fun. Don't pass on these opportunities if you are tired, so is your opponent!

I've had this position otb too after re8 and I also mistakenly played e4 since I got confused with another closed catalan line where e4 is good (the b6 lines).  In this like black is playing re8 preparing e5; thus, you should play b3! because after e5 cxd5 leads to an isolated pawn position for black which scores heavily for white.

Note:  After b3 e5 cxd5 if black recaptures d5 by knight white has the strong in-between move nc4! which forces black lose the bishop pair after qe7.

Thanks to everyone for commenting. =)

redchessman: I really like the moves that you gave me. In the position after Black pushes e5 and gets saddled with an isolated d-pawn, I would prefer White's position. I'm curious about the ideas behind b3 though, as it's not really necessary to isolate Black's d-pawn, so it must have its own purpose. Does White usually fianchetto the bishop or is b3 purely for pawn structure and supporting c4?

yeah white puts his bishop on b2.  It is necessary to give black an isolated pawn after e5.  I mean why not?  Its just an extra weakness for black which you can target since your bishops are going to be on open diagonals.

I worded my other post badly. I meant that b3 isn't necessary to give black an isolated pawn, so that means it must have another purpose. I wasn't implying that I wouldn't want to give black this extra weakness. Thanks for your input.

That endgame looks interesting, but maybe drawn. Your plan could be to march the king to the kingside, sealing black's king first and using the cramping c5-pawn.

I'm no endgame expert, but if both of you were tired, it's almost certain someone'll slip up, and it's more likely black will go wrong first.
