The play can obviously be improved at several points earlier but I do not see why black should not be much better after 24... Kg8 preventing the combination seen in the game.
Could it have been prevented?

This is the whole game just for reference. I think my greatest blunder was around move 22, where that knight and queen started attacking. Could that attack have been prevented (could I save the rook)? (Luckily I won the game by two major blunders from my opponent, but I think I'd lost it had there not been the second blunder.)
