Hello my name is Francis and i wanted to buy a chess porgram that allows me to analise my own games and others so i can improve my game could somebody tell what the best analise program is? i was thinking of buying frits 13 or Rybka 4 or even perhaps houdini whats the best???

 thanks for reading

No need to buy anything.

Arena (free) with Houdini 1.5 engine (also free) are more than enough. However, any chess program will not teach you chess- they can spot tactical errors you (or your opponent) have made, and probably provide you some valid strategical ideas... but they will never be able to explain you the fine details.

Analyze your own games before running them through a chess engine.  Chess engine are nice, but they only point out tactical issues, and do nothing to improve your game positionally.

IM pfren made an excellent suggestion.  If you try Arena and find you want a more flexible program, Fritz 10, 11, and 12 are still available and at deeply discounted prices ($5, $7, and$15 respectively on Amazon.com).  Houdini is an easy replacement for the native Fritz engine and very powerful.  Your question about ChessMentor wasn't directed at me, but as a diamond member who uses it on a daily basis, I obviously think it is great stuff.  The beginning tactics courses will really help you understand the building blocks of chess and then you can go over to the tactics trainer and test your knowledge.  There are excellent videos on all phases of the game as well.  I'm on my second year of diamond membership and consider it money very well spent.  You do have to make a serious time commitment to take advantage of these resources and there is obviously no easy path to chess improvement.  It still takes hard work; I happen to think the chess.com resources allow you to make a more efficient use of your time than simply reading books, but obviously there are many who would disagree.  Good luck whatever you decide.

I agree with IM pfren re: getting Arena and Houdini 1.5 FREE. You can also get other free chess engines such as Firebird and Stockfish which aren't exactly patzers either even if they are not as awesome as Houdini in order to compare their analysis too. BTW there is no "best" analysis program for everyone IMHO! A lot of it depends on how you define "best."

That said, if you can afford a used copy of say, Fritz 11 or 12 or Chessmaster I think it would be well worth the money for all the extra bells, whistles, tutorials etc. I sincerely doubt if you need the very latest version of any commercial chess program but if you can afford it there are worse ways to spend your dough. You can find older versions at amazon com the latest version of Fritz is 13.

GOOD LUCK!

You're very welcome.  Check out the download section under resources right here on chess.com.

Addition: If you happen to own an android device, you should consider downloading droidfish (containing the previously mentioned stockfish engine + usable UI), giving you a decent mobile tactical analysis tool for free! Smile

Simply google "Houdini chess engine" and you will find the official link for both the 32 and 64-bit versions (they are zipped together).

You wouldn't know their cost off hand would you?

I also am curious to know if you or anyone for that matter, knows a good way to explain the comparison in the ability of Houdini and Chessmaster?

bigryoung

Houdini is Bobby Fischer and Chessmaster is Danny Rensch. haha jk Rensch is awesome.

Houdini 1.5 is free, you just need a program to run it in. People have mentioned Arena which is free.

Houdini 1.5, Stockfish, Critter and Komodo 3 are all very strong engines, they eat Chessmasters for breakfast. And all of them are free.

I agree with all of the above. You don't need to spend any money. Download Arena and the 4 engines mentioned above and you wont need anything else. Personally I like to use the Ivanhoe and Robbolito chess engines as well but that is just personal preference!

DONT USE A CHESS ENGINE, seriously they make you lazy! lazy! lazy! learn how to analyze games on your own. IM David Pruess has some awesome videos on it and some free youtube ones, watch that dude analyse and you know you dont need a chess engine.

Play correspondence chess, its the art of analysis. Do you think like a machine? No? Neither do I.

I had someone comment to me the other day about a video on the Caro Kann advance variation that I had done, he said the video contained mistakes (it was infact a gambit idea) what in fact he meant was that his chess engine provided reams of alternative lines showing an advantage for white, well well, who would have thought it, of course his engine is going to evaluate an advantage, we gave up a pawn for positional compensation.  Would he be told? nope. So i left it and he continued on his merry way, oblivious, how his chess engine is going to help him in a practical game of chess I cannot say, but life is strange.
