Seems after k-g4 doesn't k-e4 draw?  I would say it is a draw unless black plays the g pawn forward

Oh I see.  ANd if 2. b4 then a-5 creating the passed pawn and winning the game.  I believe you are correct.  Seems a win for black.

3.Ke3 Kg3 4.Ke4 Kf2 5.f5 gxf5+ 6.Kxf5 Ke3 7.Ke5 transposes to 6.Ke5 in the main line, but "improves" on the subvariation given by one tempo.

Agreed. Win for black. Greenlaser's comment above is instructive: black brings his king down to f2 to penetrate and win white's f pawn.
