I would play h3. If black plays e5 you can then play Rd5. You can always play Rd6 later on, I don't see the need to sacrifce your h2 pawn.
Endgame problem

I agree. Following h3 white should be able to win black's a-pawn evening material & creating a passed pawn. It looks ok for a draw from there.
Of course, I could be completely wrong, it wouldn't be the first time.

dido, the pawn structures look pretty equal except he has the extra backward P but your R is stronger save the h-pawn then get your R right over to win the a-pawn. If his R gets behind your pawns though grab the c-pawn; "looks" drawish. PS: Rd8+ is the best chance to play for a win gaining a tempo on other variations, but still looks drawish.

Hi Prodigy, something's wrong with the move sequence you posted. It won't load for me.

Thank you everyone for your analysis. Ultimately I did play Rd6 for the sake of initiative. After Rxh2, I missed the critical Kg1 and was quickly blown away after the rook check on the back rank.
h3 is logical in order to hold the material. I didn't like the weakening of the g3 square, with the g-pawn held up forever, but something had to give way I guess.

Well h3 was better as it blocked the black rook access to the inside of your camp, and your tower could still go pick up black's pawn after.
And also, what's that, posting from an ongoing game? Tsk Tsk, read the sticky

What about g4?
You put pressure on the black rook. If black uses en-passent, white captures with hxg3. I'd start with Kg1, but it's an interesting idea to mix it up a bit.

g4 Rxh2
and even with your scenario, white's position would be worse then simply h3.

Nope, my computer had already crushed me when I posted! Didn't you see the "0-1"?

Oh damn... not only it was already finished, but you were playing a computer...
But yeah after h3, you could easily immobilize his rook for a few moves (the rook has nowhere to go really, and if Re5, Kf2 and the rook has to go back) allowing you to go pick up the a file pawn without any problem and then your passed pawn is a game winner. His better threat is the "e" pawn puch which, as you can see, isn't much of a threat and one that he cannot use until he took care of your passed pawn. I think this was a win or lose choice.

A win! A win! What program/difficulty is it by the way? Tried against Fritz and lost, gonna try again until I find something that draws (if there is you're probably gonna beat me to it however). But it's actually a very good problem as there's so many possible captures for white, but black has the exact right tempo to be able to go promote a pawn if white goes for the pawns... very good problem indeed...

I need some input here. Which is better, Rd6 or h3?...and why?
