25. Qxh6 is a great move. Well played. I am not sure I would have spotted it.
However, it's not a sacrifice for position; it's a tactical sacrifice. In fact, it's not even a sacrifice because you are not giving anything up. It's simply a very good tactical move. After 25. Qxh6 there is forced mate. Mate in 7 (at max) in fact.
I have read about sacrificing material for position but have never been confident enough to try it until now.
It is nerve-wracking when you do not have the mental visualisation skills to see the board clearly 2 moves ahead (can GMs actually hold a picture in their head of the board several moves down the line?)
On move 25 I was going to simply pick the pawn defence apart by taking on g6 in my usual pedestrian game of attrition but then I thought I saw a forced queen capture by threatening an early mate and it paid off.
I don't think there was any way out of the Queen capture for black after his fatal move 24 g6
