First tactical sacrifice

Sort:
Heinkel111

I have read about sacrificing material for position but have never been confident enough to try it until now.

It is nerve-wracking when you do not have the mental visualisation skills to see the board clearly 2 moves ahead (can GMs actually hold a picture in their head of the board several moves down the line?)

On move 25 I was going to simply pick the pawn defence apart by taking on g6 in my usual pedestrian game of attrition but then I thought I saw a forced queen capture by threatening an early mate and it paid off.

I don't think there was any way out of the Queen capture for black after his fatal move 24 g6

?

25. Qxh6 is a great move. Well played. I am not sure I would have spotted it.

However, it's not a sacrifice for position; it's a tactical sacrifice. In fact, it's not even a sacrifice because you are not giving anything up. It's simply a very good tactical move. After 25. Qxh6 there is forced mate. Mate in 7 (at max) in fact.

In this case there is already a White rook on g1, so there is no there is practically no harm in trying 25. Qxh6, since the g1 White rook is doing the same duty as the h5 White knight, that is, to attack the g7 square. Of course 25...gxh5?? 26. gxh5+ Q(any) 27. Rx(where the Black queen moves)#.

Well you have been reading on tactical sacrifices back then, and you are finally one of the players who have come forward to execute the sacrifice yourself. Congratulations!

I like it. Another goat peg premature ending.

23. f6 would have finished off black in style. Your continuation 23. g4 allows black to trade queens and the game will continue for a long time with you being a pawn up for nothing. Or to put it in computer language 23. f6 is +3 and 23. g4 is +1.4

That's pretty cool but when you did the sac, the game was pretty much forced.

that was superb just like a GM better one NPXRP +(from rook) you may have same outcome .

Here is how the game actually ended with a mate just after all the major pieces are locked in a square.

I realised later that I think missed a quicker mate. 29. h6 was a mistake. If I had played 29 Qxf7 I think there is a forced mate in 2 moves.
