can someone explain to me why it doesnt work here?

If black plays it wrong, it will work. But if after KxH7...kng5+...Kg6...black is uncomfortable with the naked king but it is not that easy for white to close the deal. If instead of Kg6 black goes KG8 or H8 then it is mate in 2 with the traditional greek gift.

If greek gifted, Kg6 is almost always the best move...though typically still losing

apparently even if kg8 white barely has an advantage. This is from my recent game if you want to have a look on how it went

If the black king can safely get to f6 after playing Kg6, it typically won't work.

Usually the black knight is booted from f6 with a pawn on e5, if a white pawn was on e5 it should work here, Not guaranteed to win, but at least secure a draw.

Black did not take the bishop but went H8...that seems to be a good move if white does not follow up correctly. Though the computer says taking the bishop is better than H8...then escaping as I stated earlier. But H8 seemed to work as white did not follow up correctly. Pushing your H pawn to eventually take away his center pawn is the idea for white moving forward before bringing out the queen
