Thanks for the help.

Well... I have to start somewhere, don't I?

You are not allowed to THINK such a move as 2...f6, let alone playing it...

If you understand WHY you shouldn't even consider such a move, then we can go on.

Don't think I can go d6 or else ill end up losing my right to castle. f6 ended up weakening my king side.

Don't move your f-pawn in the opening unless you know what you're doing, especially if you're playing Black! That is a very fast way to lose by exposing your king, as in Damiano's Defense. Here is what White could have done to you:

I believe it would help a lot if you learned just 1-2 more moves deeper into normal openings, such as playing 2...exd4 instead of 2...f6. Per statistics, with 2...exd4 White wins 46% of the time, but with 2...f6 White wins 75% of the time. Therefore by learning only one more move of that opening (called the Center Game), you decrease White's likelihood of winning by 75% - 46% = 29%!

I have been a victim of this, and have tried it on opponents many times, it was a stupid move now I understand. I have not seen its weakness too much thought, no one at my level takes advantage of it. Thanks Sqod.

2...f6 is an error because of 3.dxe5 and (if you recapture) 4.Qh5+. 2...exd4 is necessary.

From move 8 onward, you could/should have captured e4 for free.

"I believe I might have been trapped and ended up losing the bishop and knight for a rook if he had tried to go on g 1. " Well, they got the same in another way.

Apart from that: your opponent made too many blunders. You can't learn much from such games.

Losing castling rights with queens off the board isn't a big deal- actually, I don't even think 2...d6 3.dxe5 is white's best.

But why you have to protect the e5 pawn instead of simply taking on d4?

If you want to improve become a free member of chess tempo and solve 25 tactical puzzles a day. Or buy chess tactics for kids or any good chess tactics book and start studying it. An endgame study book wouldn't be bad either. I was far worse than you ,maybe rated 500 standard, and then I decided to try to get good. The way I climbed to roughly 1450 was by playing Chess Titans. When I could beat level 2 I played the next level and then the next. I remmber the triumph I felt when I beat level 4. I kept playing till I could beat all ten levels. The only really good chess book I owned was  How to beat your dad at chess. I am no master, but I think by doing what I suggested you could climb to 1400 in one to two years.

And do not play anything but standard and online chess. Speed chess is for strong club players and higher.

8.f4 would have won material, the bishop was trapped ;)

Actually the only way to justify 2.f6?? is 3.de5 Nc6(!) and... praying for some scantly visible form of compensation... Tongue Out
