How could I have avoided the stalemate?

Thought I was close to winning but it seems I entered a stalemate. What should I have done differently to avoid this? My last move was taking whites pawn at A2 with my knight.

You have played anything similar to Qe2, and it is a simple mate in 1 after that, there are dozens of simple mates in two you could have found
