How many possible chess board layouts can there possibly be?

This includes board layouts where pieces may have already been taken. And as an extent, how many of those boards would be possible to recreate in game by following the traditional rules of chess? I'm asking this here as I can not seem to find any straight answer. Any help at all is appreciated.
