I decided to play a little bit crazy today

I do get tired of the standard openings and variations...so sometimes I get a wild hair and try dubious opening moves to shake things up.  I like how it makes me think creatively.

Comments welcome

you got lucky, that opening is so uneffective =P.. however you got through very well I say.

Whenever I feel bored I do the same thing. The trick behind this is keeping the postion solid.

Interesting game. However, I try not to play dubious openings when I feel creative, but instead experiment with known openings such as the Evans Gambit which are not very common. That way they still have a chance of giving me victory.

Great game!

I think it's funny one guy said Nf4 like it would have changed the game completely and another said I got lucky.

The point is luck doesn't have anything to do with it.  I was just a better player that game.

I remember a story about Bobby Fischer in his later years playing online with another GM. Of course this can't be verified...However the story goes that this mystery man (bobby) would place all his pawns on the third rank before starting any "opening" system and still wipe the floor with the top players on the site.

And opening like this for sure didn't do me any huge favors as far as gaining an advantage out of the opening, but it wasn't easy for him to play against and really does force creative thinking.

NEVER TRY THATU GOT LUCKY BECAUSE UR OPPENENT was weak

You're right, there's nothing to do with "luck" here, you just, in effect, gave your opponent odds. For centuries, strong players have been giving odds to weaker players in the hopes of making a more interesting contest--material odds of pawn and move, for instance, or time odds (five minutes to two minutes, or something like that).

Here, you simply gave your opponent positional odds. Not that long ago, I was playing blitz with a strong master who frequents my club. A player whom  I'd just defeated was standing nearby, talking about how he likes to mix things up now and again. So after I played 1 e4, the master replied with 1...a6. The bystander was aghast that the master would play something so crazy. So after 2 d4 the master played 2...h6 and explained that if one was talking about "mixing it up," one should put his moves where his mouth is. I ended the game up a rook, but losing on time. So an enjoyable game was had by all.

And, unless you're one of the tiny number of professionals whose next meal depends on performance, isn't that the point?

lol I can't believe you lost to him on time. That was pretty fun to watch.

I'm not sure if you are responding to DimKnight and the game he played with the master or the game above.  The game above was resigned by black for obvious reasons and won by white (me).
