Game that ended today. Its so hard to beat people in daily and also i want to improve. In this game that ended in a draw i was up a pawn in the endgame but I find no way to push it further. I struggle massive in this game on my queen side, my knight got stuck and my pawns got super weak and hard to defend. But i manage to find a counter attack so the game turned into a draw. Was it bad for me to go for a queen trade? I tried to do something with that pinned piece next to his king but he defended it good.

Have you tried using opening books and databases? They might help you learn some openings and avoid the closed locked up position you had to suffer through in that game.

They are legal to use in daily games. In the above position, you can see that 3..d6 is not very popular in the Ruy López.

If you select d6, you can see the range of moves played.

4 d4 was the number one choice. It would probably have opened up your game right then!

Thanks for the reply. I have never used it. I thought one was not allowed to use it during a game.

It's absolutely legal. You can't run an engine but databases and books are legal.

I think it's one of the best points in playing daily is that it gives you the chance to learn a lot. I don't play it much now but I used to play it back when people actually used postcards and books.

3..d6 isn't a bad move but it's not too common.  It gives you the chance to play d4 immediately and reach an open game.

Aha i see. I also notice that it popped up more in your reply earlier. But also i want to understand the moves. So not only go by book but to understand to. Because my playstyle so far have been to keep center closed. But i have notice that many master that play on twitch likes to blast center open. To me its kinda hard to know when its good or bad to open the center. But if i have to guess it would be that its good to open up center if your opponent play passive. So maybe i should have that as a goal for my training now to try to open up center more? Do that apply for black to?

This is from today, but this is blitz. I got my shot here. He is higher ranked and i tried my very good effort to try to beat him. And i manage to trap his rook. I was so happy. But then i hang my rook in the end but i manage to draw the game. I wanna cry after that blunder. But overall i am kinda happy about that game. Because it proves to myself that i can at least play vs a bit higher rated people. And also this is also a closed position but in my comfortzon because i played this position so many times. And my opponents always see that weak pawn and try to attack if from many angels but its kinda good defended by pieces so in the end they usually offer a pawn to trade it away.

Maybe its just that my playstyle works at my level in blitz and i am getting used to bad habits?

step 1 - queen sac

Today I manage to hit 1500 in Blitz. It feels amazing to get this new record for me.

Most likley i will drop under 1500 again but its still feels amazing.

I have been playing mostly 5+0 because 3+0 is a bit to fast for me and I like/need some extra time.

Is it easier to rank up in blitz then Rapid and Daily?  Daily feels like the hardest because your opponent is less likley to do misstake there compared to shorter timed games.

I personally do not like daily chess. It encourages lazy playing (databases and almost unlimited time).

My advice is to play mostly rapid games. Maybe a little blitz as well.

Rapid time controls allow you to actually think about what you're doing, rather than blitz which is usually just impulse based.

Playing lots of rapid+analyzing my games afterwards helped me a lot.

Also work on your openings a bit there. The game you posted showed you making several moves forward, (like qa4) but then you had to just get kicked back (qd1 be2). This loses time and helps black catch up in development.

I wondered about your pawn push in turn 4.

Oh do you mean h3? Its just to stop the opponent to bring his bishop to pin my knight to the queen. It also stops knights from moving in.

Here is a more updated game. I manage to win vs a 1700. I beat him two times but in the first game he made a hugh blunder so the win feelt less but in this one my win feelt more like a real win because there where no huge blunders. This game is from a onlinetournament, with daily chess and you have 5 days per move. Which is a bit much because the games can be a bit to slow for my taste.
